RTI Reply by NITI Aayog on Working Document on Responsible AI: #AIForAll

On July 30th, NITI Aayog had released a working document titled Towards Responsible #AIForAll”. The deadline for submission of comments on this document was initially August 10th which was later extended to August 28th. The draft document states that it was “prepared for an expert consultation held on July 21st, 2020”.

We at SFLC.in had filed an RTI application on August 5th, 2020 with the NITI Aayog seeking details of expert consultation undertaken by it for the purposes of drafting this working document.

The NITI Aayog has replied that the first consultation for the development of the document was during the National AI Ethics Framework Consultation Workshop held on December 13th, 2019. Another round of consultation was virtually organized on July 21st, 2020. The working document, however, only talks about the second round of consultation on July 21st, 2020. It has not made any mention of the first round of consultations.

The first workshop was facilitated by the Center for Industrial Revolution (C4IR) of the World Economic Forum. The speakers for the event included Sanjay S. Sharma (Accenture), Prof Amit Sethi (IIT Bombay), and Pavan Duggal (Supreme Court).

The second round of consultation was also facilitated by Center for Industrial Revolution (C4IR) of the World Economic Forum. The speakers for the events were John Havens from IEEE and Gary Merchant from the Arizona University.

No other civil society organisations except for ORF and Vidhi Legal were present at the event.

We have attached the reply received to the application filed under the RTI Act below.
